In the end, I don't know how much I would use such a place. I barely have time during the school year to play video games or other such mindless activities, let alone time to spend with my mind in creative mode. Still, a writing gazebo would be nice.
Janelle sent me a link to an article about various writers' daily schedules. While reading how these writers went about their daily business of writing was interesting in and of itself, the article also included numerous pictures of different authors' writing spaces. Many of them were small sheds or other such buildings that were in picturesque locations. One was a tower in a European castle, the interior lined with bookshelves interspaced with windows and several writing areas. But the one that caught my attention was Neil Gaiman's writing gazebo in Minnesota. It's a cute little structure that is on a small set of stilts, resting on the side of a hill and surrounded by trees. Most of its walls are made up of massive windows (that look like they could be opened), providing a writing environment that is both within, yet set apart from its natural setting. There is also a deck on the side of the structure that looks down the hill. Inside, there is enough space for a centrally located desk, a few chairs, and some small bookcases to hold materials, notes, and references. One of my immediate concerns with the structure was whether it could be used in not so temperate seasons. I did, however, find a picture showing him in the gazebo at some point in the winter, so I assume that there is some sort of heating mechanism (As I do not see any evidence of exhaust, so I believe it must be an electrical space heater). I don't need a writing gazebo, but I am envious of these kinds of spaces. Before buying our current house, we had made an initial offer on a house that had a large garage-like building with multiple stories. The upper level had windows that offered a fair view (considering the small size of the lot) as well as plenty of open space. I really wish we could have purchased that home.
In the end, I don't know how much I would use such a place. I barely have time during the school year to play video games or other such mindless activities, let alone time to spend with my mind in creative mode. Still, a writing gazebo would be nice.
