The movie was not what I expected. After the latest Spider-Man movie, I was hoping for cameos with greater depth and meaning; however, despite there being multiple cameos for fan-service purposes, they were largely back to the short-term "Hey, that's ..." without a lasting impact--even if some might indicate hope for future casting in upcoming movies. Also, while it does set up future plots (for either movies or shows), it was not as much of a universe-changing experience as even the title suggested. My biggest disappoint was in the villain. Seriously, while this movie does fit with what has come before, the villain's actions and the villain's fate had me mentally screaming "No!"
The movie is also clearly a Sam Rami film with literal (as well as figurative) winks to the camera as bizarre, and sometimes almost horrifying, scenes play out. This made the film something both different and familiar to what has come before in Marvel movies (and DC movies as some of this movie had a vibe similar to the recent Suicide Squad film). Basically, it was strange.
It is not my favorite of the Marvel movies, but I'm still glad that I watched it. I want to watch it again, but I'm pretty sure that I can wait to do so.
