It might sound strange, but attending these funerals has led me to thinking about what sorts of readings and songs I would want at my own funeral. One that I had long thought that I would want ("Bread of Life") because of lyrics like "I will raise you up" no longer seems as fitting as it also has a verse that seems exclusionary. Likewise, "On Eagle's Wings" has a nice refrain, but has verses that don't mesh quite as well. That said, the song "We Will Rise Again" by David Haas has really grown on me.
I know that it ultimately won't matter to me; however, I do not want those who are planning it to be burdened with decisions such as which songs to play. I also would like for those who are gathered (should anybody gather) to hear the beauty of God's message. Hopefully, my death would in this way bring people closer to God and each other.
