By far, I have played StarCraft II more than any other game. My brother, Jon, and I have purchased all of the expansions and play about once or twice a week (the wonders of modern technology). I even play with Trevor on a relatively regular basis. Partially, I blame Uncle Kevin for my addiction, as he was the one to first introduce me to the original StarCraft when it first came out.
Each of the expansions has its own set of achievements for the main campaign. Some come from simply beating the levels, others from taken on challenges that range from the impressive to the frustrating. However, no achievement stymied me more than the "Lost Viking" achievement in the Wings of Liberty campaign.
All of the other challenges at least have something to do with the core game's mechanics. These three achievements are entirely about playing through a "bullet-hell" mini game which gives no in-game rewards. To get the top achievement, one must achieve a score of at least 500,000 points. This requires more than two hours of continuous play, considerable hand-eye coordination, and the determination (and wrist endurance) to mash the spacebar as fast as you can for the entire time.
I gave up on it a long time ago.
There it always sat: Wing of Liberty campaign - 98% complete. Heart of the Swarm? 100% Legacy of the Void? 100%. No, the first campaign taunted me for nearly six years with that pesky 2%. I decided last week to take it on.
Why now? I'm not certain. I think it was my daughter Alex's insistence that I play Undertale (a different "bullet-hell" game) that ultimately inspired me.
Well, in short, on the fourth attempt I made it, my arm sore and my eyes unfocused. One would think that a measly (and arbitrary) 2% would not be worth it ... but it was ... oh, yes ... it was.
Victory is sweet.
