Jesus demonstrates this love while on the cross in many ways, but one of the most powerful is when He forgives his tormentors. Jesus' greatest message to us has been that of forgiveness. This does not mean acceptance of wrongful behavior, but rather loosing one's soul from the burden of hate and rage. Forgiveness does not necessarily absolve people from the consequences of their actions, but instead frees them from the actions themselves and the burden which weighs their spirit.
Jesus suffered greatly through His Passion. The suffering itself did not bring us redemption. There are others in the world who have suffered more than He did. What redeems us is His love, for that is greater than any love humankind has known.
