Recently, due to how Mera was packed for a trip to the landfill, I had him sit in the front seat for the first time. He was clearly equal parts hesitant and excited. He has another year before I will let it be a regular occurrence, but it still felt like a momentous event. At that moment, I almost wanted to rearrange everything to keep him in the back seat--not so much for his protection, but because I don't think that I'm ready for him to grow up just yet.
Today was a low-key birthday. He had his new, favorite meal for dinner (it used to be pancakes, but it's now Janelle's amazing chicken tortilla soup) and a homemade chocolate cake with fudge frosting for desert. He got a new far-shooting Nerf gun and a video game with Mario and Sonic at the Olympic as his gifts. Earlier, he went off to watch videos on his own before he came out to watch me finish Horizon: Forbidden West which he had beaten earlier (my full spoiler-free review is with my other video game reviews here). We also watched (and greatly enjoyed) the first episode of the new Star Trek series: Strange New Worlds.
And just like that, he's fully a twelve-year-old.
