The first reading for today brings the Church to more than just the circumcised Jewish community. Peter and the others from Jerusalem watch as the Holy Spirit descends upon all of the believers gathered, even the uncircumcised Gentiles. This changes the meaning of "chosen people." We are God's chosen people because WE chose God, and in turn God chooses us.
The second reading and Gospel both talk about God's only law being that of love. God is love. We are surrounded by love at all times, and when we choose to love others, the love within us magnifies. Modern society has tried to pervert and limit the idea of love into meaning sex, but God offers us limitless love, a love not bound by the passions of the body.
This is also the Gospel which I mentioned in the past few weeks. In it, Jesus says that we are His friends, not slaves. God doesn't want mindless devotion. He gives us free will and treats us as friends, ready to help us any time that we call, but not forcing us to love Him. His love is unconditional and eternal ... much like a mother's.
