It's true. "Entitlement" is getting a negative connotation right now, but that is by those who believe that they are entitled to deny other people their entitlements.
It would be true that, as creatures of an uncaring world, we would be entitled to nothing; there would be no certain, let alone unalienable, rights other than death. There are those who have an investment in getting people to believe that view of the world. That way they can profit on the misery of others (usually while being miserable themselves) because "that's the way the world works."
However, I know that we operate in a world created by a caring God. It is our duty to look out for not just ourselves, or even for our fellows in humanity, but for the entire world. We have certain unalienable rights, and we need to make certain that they are available to all people. To me, that means all people have the rights of healthy lives, true liberty, and the ability to pursue and attain happiness.
Our current healthcare system denies the first to most people in this country, our current copyright laws and litigious society deny the second, and our current worship of banks and the corporate system deny the third. Somehow people have been convinced that the things which our country were founded to fight are now "too big to fail." I don't believe in them, but I do believe in the welfare of humanity and the welfare of our country. I suppose that I do have a welfare mentality.
