Often, Janelle and the boys aren't at home during this time because she's taking Trevor (and the other two with him) to CASE - a program for young people on the autism spectrum. They usually get home at around 6pm. So, this semester, Katrina and I are usually watching something together.
Sometimes, however, I'm all by myself. In this case, Katrina is in Ireland and Janelle and the boys had a potluck at CASE so they didn't get back until after I had already left. I knew about this in advance, so I picked up a double cheeseburger and large fries (with a $3 coupon) and a ten piece chicken nuggets (for $1.49) from Burger King, got a Rock and Rye soda from the basement fridge ... and couldn't figure out what to watch. Now I could have brought out the book that I've been reading, or look through Facebook or other Internet things, but I'm a creature of habit and I just wanted to sit back, relax, and watch something while I eat.
I couldn't watch any of the programs that we watch together as a family because I can't skip ahead. The time was too short to watch any of the movies that Janelle doesn't care for or that I don't want the young boys to watch yet. I also didn't want to watch something that I was hoping to share with Trevor sometime soon (He's at the age that I want to show him all of the things that I like that I now think that he will understand). I spent a sizable portion of my time thinking about this on my drive home and not coming up with a solution.
In the end, I happened to see our case for Guardians of the Galaxy. I know Janelle is sick of it, but I can watch movies that I like time and time again. I didn't have time for the whole thing, but I skipped scenes that I didn't really care for, making certain to hit the most climatic elements (the final climax being my favorite ... "Take my hand, Peter" ... what a good film!).
While I still play some video games on my own, I realized today that a good deal of my day-to-day entertainment is connected with my family. I think that is a good thing, but ... man ... did it take a while to figure out what to watch today.
