I have to admit that I shared a bit of their concern. Aside from the mosquitoes that were making a meal of me and the tiredness that I was feeling, I found that I was also quite jumpy. The barking of the neighbor dogs, who were no doubt responding to my two squeakers, put enough midnight fear into me that I would usually take the puppies in at the sound whether they had gone or not.
The fact that it is still light out throughout the night is also a bit unnerving. Don't get me wrong; if it were dark, my imagination would be painting some much more vivid pictures. Still, in the twilight glow that is in the air here while all reasonable people are asleep reminds me as nothing so much as the washed out colors of "The Walking Dead" (I knew I never should have watched that show, no matter how good its reviews). I don't doubt that being in a near dreamlike state only enhances such imaginings.
We settled on the names Starbuck (for the black one) and River (for the brown). Starbuck is the more adventurous of the two and currently seems to be the dominant puppy. River (named after both River Tam and River Song, but not River Phoenix) can hold her own in the puppy battles, but is more prone to whining at any kind of confinement, including when she walks to the end of her leash. Rather than going a different direction, she keeps trying to go the way she started, whining and yipping louder if she doesn't get her way.
It's a good thing we picked these two up this early in summer break. I'd hate to be going through this process during school and in the winter.
