You see, I worry about people who get too excited when discussing the possibility of devils and demons possessing people and affecting our daily lives. To be clear, I do believe in supernatural forces, such as demons and angels, who can affect our lives. My concern is when people get almost enthusiastic about the idea.
Historically, this sort of enthusiasm does not turn out well. For all of the claims of "witch hunts" made by people these past few years, this kind of talk can lead to actual "witch" hunts. It happens frequently throughout history and across cultures. In fact, it still happens today, but thankfully not in a widespread forum (at least, not yet).
However, my larger issue is with the lack of responsibility that this line of thinking can cause. "The devil made me do it" is a defense that has been used before. Throughout time, people have feared of demonic possession. We originally said "Bless you" when someone sneezed to keep the person's body in a holy state while their soul (which had been so forcefully expelled by the sneeze) had time to return. This way a lingering spirit could not take advantage of the briefly vacated body (a superstitious connection between sneezing and illness). With an excuse of possession or even demonic influence, one can start to excuse all sorts of unsightly behavior.
"That's ridiculous!" you say? I answer, but people use modern "demons" of alcohol and other drugs to excuse--or at least explain--their behavior. They will say that it was not really them, but the intoxication that led them to do those things that they otherwise wouldn't.
We are responsible, regardless. Thus, I worry about the enthusiasm when demons are mentioned.
