I was also quite pleased by his mention of St. George, the dragon slayer whom I briefly reference in my book. While there is not a great deal actually known about him, the legend of St. George facing the dragon is quite similar to the story in the movie Dragonslayer in that he went to the dragon's nest and defeated the dragon after the name of the princess was drawn as the virgin to be sacrificed to the beast and its brood. Such a story certainly captured my attention as a young boy (even if the movie itself was rather disappointing--probably because it only shared that one part with St. George's story). While I often consider Thomas More to be my favorite saint, St. George certainly ranks up there.
Today, we honor the saints (both named and unknown), those who have made it to heaven today, and ask that they pray for us as we attempt a similar journey. Tomorrow, on All Souls Day, we pray for all souls, especially those in Purgatory, who are still working their way to heaven. Together, these holy days address our fears of death and give us hope for a heavenly future.
