Still, holidays have endings, and this was a pleasant holiday for us even if we did not travel anywhere (well, aside from Anchorage) ourselves. The fond moments will continue to warm my heart as I think of them, and that will will serve as fuel for my soul. Although I have work to do tomorrow, my holiday does not really end until Monday. Thankfully, these past couple of weeks have helped to rejuvenate me, which is what good holidays should do.
Connor and I have just returned from Anchorage, having dropped Alex off at the airport. I am sad to part with her as she brings laughter and wit with her while she is here. With her and her sister now either back or heading back to Michigan, our home (the entire state for that matter) seems emptier.

I still have difficulty accepting that we currently live in the year 2019. How has it been 19 years since the Y2K scare? We are living in the future, and considering some of the scenarios that I thought the future would be like, things really aren't that bad.
The primary events in my life this past year have been all high points. One of the biggest was Katrina's marriage to Peter in June. Not only did we add a new family member and get to dress up for the occasion, but we spent several weeks reconnecting with family and friends in Michigan before and after the event. This included introducing my sons to the joys of Cedar Point. I then returned to the Lower 48 at the end of August for my brother's wedding. This time, I gained a sister (in-law) and got a chance to meet her family. This time Katrina was my only child with me. Although a substantially shorter trip, it was packed with activity. August also saw the end of my coursework for my doctorate. Although I am still slowly (agonizingly) working on my dissertation, it was nice to reach that milestone. Hopefully, I can finish the rest before too long. During this year, I have also become a bit more established at Soldotna High School, having completed my first year there and started my second. I feel like I've become closer to my colleagues and am starting to fit in a bit better. I have also been teaching for over 20 years, another milestone that seemed so far away not that long ago. I met my resolution point goal, but not by as much as in previous years. I'm five pounds lighter than I was a year ago, but as that was ten pounds up from the year before, it doesn't feel like much of an accomplishment. I managed to write a blog entry (of varying length and quality) for every day of the year, but my writing was otherwise mostly limited to work and school. I also did not play a single game of D&D, which is the first year that has been true since I started playing in 1989 [Wow!]. I also turned 45. I think that it was a good year. The past couple of days have been packed with good times. As per our annual tradition, the Jacks came down from Anchorage. This year, they were able to spend two nights, which gave us even more time to enjoy each other's company. The one downside was that Janelle worked two of the three days that they were here.
While the kids sledded and played Smash Brothers (Wii U version), MarioKart, and Nintendoland, we played a variety of board and card games. We taught them Seven Wonders, learned together how to play Forbidden Island, and belly-laughed through Cards Against Humanity. However, our mainstay was, as always, Settlers of Catan. I don't know how many games we played. We also went to the Orca Theater to watch Bumblebee. Aside from the old animated movie, I think this might be my favorite Transformers movie. Granted, that's a low bar to hurdle, but I felt that this movie was closer to what I wanted any of the previous live-action movies to be. Unfortunately, it's box office showing means that we probably will probably see a reboot rather than a continuation of this storyline. Still, we went with an appreciative group which made watching the movie even more fun. These days of celebration passed quickly, but with plenty of laughs and good times. |
