I did not expect to have today off due to cold weather (and thus I was not disappointed). Last year, under similar circumstances, my school (and many other in the county) did not close despite the wind chills dipping below -25. I did not see today as being any different, and it wasn't. Yet a large number of people have been surprised by my school's decision not to close.
I will admit that I was a bit disappointed. After all, some of my friends who teach at other schools were bragging as early as last night about not having to come in to work. Worse, after starting my morning ablutions, I heard the phone ring, raising my hopes a bit more, only to discover that it was my children's school that was closed. I even received another call just as I was about to get to the school parking lot, only to find that it was one of my coworkers (who had just heard that a neighboring school district had closed) wanting to know if he had been missed by our automated system and fan-out.
I truly can't speak to whether our school should have closed or not, but I would have preferred if it did. It may be a little mean-spirited, but I kind of hope that enough snow days are on the way that those other schools who got the day off will have to add an extra day in June while I get to stay home and fully enjoy the day.
