I've caught myself more than once starting a comment on someone's politically stupid post, but I've managed to stop myself as I don't want all of my next day's allotment wasted with an argument that will not convince them of anything. As I've considered that, I wonder if this is the route I should take in general. Would it be better for everyone involved if I ignored their asinine rantings like they are the "crazy uncle" at the holidays?
TV shows are filled with the stereotypical crazy uncle who has bizarre (usually outmoded and often offensive) beliefs that everyone only tolerates because he's family. When the crazy uncle starts to give out advice, everyone rolls their eyes with a sort of "here he goes again" look that demonstrates to the other family members their own sanity. Sometimes, the uncle even learns that he is the butt of the jokes and makes an effort to improve.
Granted, to some people I am the "crazy uncle" in their lives. They see my comments or my posts and believe that I have made an escape from the insane asylum. A few people have told me directly that I'm clearly out of touch with reality.
Of course, I am … but that doesn't mean that I'm not right.
