It purpose is provide us with more sunshine in the evenings throughout the winter and to avoid the many problems that are associated with switching the clocks forth and back every year. The entirety of this mess is ridiculous, so I have no issue with removing the time changes. I am even close to being convinced that a permanent switch to an hour forward can work too, especially since the bulk of our population cannot figure out to just adjust our work schedules by an hour rather than our measurement of time.
However, there is still a lot of work to go for any end to this yearly madness. Even if approved by the federal government, there's no guarantee that states (Hawaii and Arizona don't follow Daylight Savings Time ever … more power to them) or even regions (such as territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico who also never move from Standard Time) will adopt the change (although nearly twenty states have already passed some sort of legislation to permanently switch once federal approval is give). Still, although this type of bill has had problems in the past, there seems to be growing support for an end to this insanity.
All I know for certain is that I'm going to be extra tired this next week.
