The last campaign I ran with this group was Pool of Radiance, set in the Forgotten Realms. They made it a good way through before we had a long furlough due to scheduling conflicts, and none of us are really interested in returning to it. Also, despite having played multiple computer games and having read several books set within it, I'm not that well-versed in the world of Faerun where the Forgotten Realms takes place. I could revive the campaign that I based on Dragon Quest 7 as it has a focus on three characters, but after the Pool of Radiance attempt, I think that I want to stay clear from video game based adventures--no matter how interesting the story.
For completely different reasons, I don't want to run an adventure in Mer, the world of The Pirates of Dark Water. I still would like to run more adventures in that realm, but it requires that the players take on specific roles which I last had family members take on. I'm not yet ready to have other people take those roles.
Thus, I'm thinking of going a completely different route and forging a new story entirely. I still have a couple of worlds that I made on my own that I could use, or I could go for something entirely new. There are risks and benefits to any choice that I make, but the one thing that I want to accomplish is for everyone to have fun ... including me.
