There have been some paperwork difficulties in Chloe's quest to spend a school year in America. However, it looks like everything is finally in process to get her here on the 18th. In the meantime, we've been sending emails back and forth in an effort to get to know each other better.
I have several other exchange students in my classes (I believe we will have nine in the school this year). Back in high school, my group of friends always made it a point to welcome in any exchange students ... even if they later found "cooler" friends. My awe for them has certainly never lessened.
The bravery required to go to another country, let alone one that speaks another language, during a time of life when so many changes are going on astounds me. These young people find themselves immersed in a different, maybe even alien culture, navigating its hidden rules while still trying to deal with the day-to-day requirements of taking classes, being involved in activities, and ... well ... living as a teenager. How tremendous an experience and opportunity this is!
Despite my standing order to myself to not wish away time, September 18th cannot come soon enough for me!
