One part of his homily that really stood out to me was when he said that we often don't learn something because we believe we already know it. This prejudice that we hold of our preconceived notions so often blinds of from the Truth that surrounds us. I thought back to Yoda "You must unlearn what you have learned" and the High Aldwin "Forget all you know, or think you know." Yes, this means that my philosophical connection is due to George Lucas. While these ideas seem rather Zen, they also show why people so often cling to ideas that they believe to be true or they want to be true no matter how wildly fantastical they might actually be.
I know I suffer from this. It is only with great conscious effort that I can open myself to the realization that what I believe to be true might not actually be Truth. I like shortcuts that take me quickly to an answer, but I don't always realize that those answers might not actually fit the questions. This is more than just recognizing that I don't know everything, but rather realizing that even what I think I know might not be True at all.
