Banks, some businesses, and government agencies follow these holidays, but schools do not out of an outmoded idea that seat time is the most important element of education [read: it is not]. In fact, I believe that more holidays should be followed. In particular, election day (and perhaps the hangover day that follows) should certainly be a national holiday. Despite research which indicates increased productivity with more time to relax (which is how we got Saturdays off), our corporate-run national mentality wants to push the idea that we should be working more hours with less compensation.
I'm going to stop myself here before I go into a rant. Basically, even with remote learning (perhaps, especially with remote learning), we need more opportunities to rest and refresh. That goes for all people, not just students.
