Our local stores are running low, and thus putting limits, on masks, soaps, and disinfectants of all kinds. People are walking around the stores with masks (which aren't as effective in preventing someone from catching the disease as they are in preventing someone from spreading it). It's even affecting my Alaskan retirement fund ... such as it is.
With the number of unknowns about this disease, it's understandable that people have become nervous about it. However, it's important that people not panic, as extreme responses can cause more problems than they are trying to solve. In this case, taking some common sense precautions while still keeping a level head is the best solution.
Considering that we're chest deep in flu season anyway, people should really wash their hands, especially just before eating. Using disinfectant to wipe down communal surfaces such as door knobs, tables, shared keyboards, etc. is certainly reasonable. This would also be a good time to not share drinks with other people (I've had to really talk to some of my students about this lately). Basically, remember how germs are spread and try to limit practices that would spread them.
Most importantly, don't panic.
