Oddly, I cannot help but feel an echo of my own religious views in this advice. This is an area of my faith that I often struggle with considering my deep attachment to patriotic idea of "certain, inalienable rights" as being central to every individual. The two ideas are not mutually exclusive, but they are a delicate alloy to bind together--while every human being has rights that should not be taken away, these rights are ultimately beyond what we deserve based on our own actions and nature. Rather, we should continually strive towards being worthy of such rights, and one way to do so is to recognize those rights in others.
