While this frees up one of my evenings, it also deprives me of my weekly fix of singing. Sure, I can still sing in church, and will even be cantor for a few masses, and I can always dust off the guitar, but it's just not the same. There is something about being a part of a choir, of singing songs with intertwining melody and harmonies, that touches something deep within my being.
It is also a time when I feel most connected to my church and to God. We are fortunate to have such a beautiful church to worship in. Singing those glorious hymns within it is pure joy. Even walking to and from the building, when the sky is dark and the amazing stained glass windows are shining out their pictures, fills me with a sense of reverence.
Then there are the people. Our choir is comprised of an amazing group of loving and caring individuals who are, quite simply, fun to be around. We laugh and make wonderful music together. Despite sometimes late practices, I usually leave our choir invigorated and full of love for my fellow human beings.
Aside from a freer Wednesday evening, the only good thing about not having choir during these summer months is that the absence of it makes my appreciation for it that much stronger.
