Captain Marvel was the only one we saw at the theater, having just been released last week. It is a well-crafted origin story with a female lead superhero. While I would not set it as one of the best movies that the MCU has created, it is far from the worst. The characters, even the villains, were interesting. The plot unfolded in a satisfying way. Some scenes were outright hilarious. It also worked well for all of the ages of my family--I would think that my mother would even like seeing it. Most importantly, I could watch it again.
Ralph Breaks the Internet was another cute movie dealing with the entities that live within our computers (making the part where the main characters were playing a Tron game particularly meta). The plot is generally simple with a message about allowing friends to follow their dreams. I would like to see this one again if for no other reason that I was playing Catan while I watched most of it. Even distracted, I loved quite a few of the scenes and laughed out loud regularly--especially at some of the Easter eggs.
I expected Kong: Skull Island to be a movie about monsters fighting. I was not disappointed. There is a small amount of character development that drew me in, but it mostly gets lost in the massive number of characters and ... well ... the monster fighting. Still, I enjoyed this movie throughout. It was certainly funnier than I expected it would be. It was also not as disgusting as other monster movies that I have watched. It also makes some interesting connections with, and thus raises some questions about, the previous Godzilla movie. Both were worth watching, so I'm interested to see how they get tied together.
