Today, because the high jump is one of his events, we had to be in Kenai at the track around 9:15 this morning. Janelle and I watched him make his attempts; however, he has not yet made 4'10" which was the starting height (his personal record [PR] is 4'8"). As he did not have any other events until the afternoon, Janelle and I then headed out to stop by Home Depot, visit the beach, and have a lunch date at Louie's (although, we both ordered off the breakfast menu).
We arrived back at the track in time to watch several events before Connor ran in the unified 400m (4x100m) relay (where special education students are paired with other students, like Connor, as a competitive team). I was happy to see him actually race his competitors as the temptation is often to not give a full attempt in these events. His team was quite happy to earn their first place position.
Connor's other two races were the 400m and the 1600m (4x400m) relay. As he has not been feeling well the past couple of days, we were all happy with his performances. He didn't manage to get a PR at this meet, and he still ended up throwing up after his individual event (apparently, this is an inherited issue that is not supposed to cause me concern), but he still placed 13th out of 26 in the 400m and his team got 3rd out of 6 for the 1600m relay.
As the 1600m relay was the last event of the meet, he was there for the entirety of the event. He took an ice bath yesterday to help with his shin splints in advance of the race and is taking an Epsom salt warm bath tonight to ease the soreness. He deserves the relaxation.
