Thus, I was quite excited to hear that we would get to learn more about what happens next while following one of the greatest Captains: Jean Luc Picard (Sure, Star Trek: Lower Decks is set some time between, but it’s hard for me to get excited about a humorous cartoon spin-off). I’ve seen it written that part of the show’s creation was as a type of apology for the haphazard killing off of Data in Nemesis, and this show does seem to atone for that. However, after now watching the series, there are parts of this future that I would have preferred not to see.
Generally, I liked the show, but the faults stand out. It’s basically one, really long, exposition-heavy movie, following a single plotline across ten episodes. Some of the call backs and new characters (I’m a big fan of the holograms) are absolutely amazing; some are a little too … overdone. The main plot is both intensely convoluted, and yet resolved a bit too simply. There are bizarre coincidences that made me think that THIS series should have been called Destiny. Finally, there are some glaring issues with at least one of the main elements that still bother me.
Still, I would easily watch it again, and I look forward to see where it goes from here.
