Some of my fondest memories involve playing cards. My earliest memories are of my father playing a type of solitaire card game on his bed. I remember being quite happy when he taught me how to play Cribbage. In high school, my group of friends would play Euchre, Hassenpfeffer (which is Euchre with bidding, including no-trump high and no-trump low), and Hearts (depending on the number of people) during lunch and other down times. I remember that some of us came up with some elaborate hand and foot signals for our partners. With another group, I played penny-ante poker (all different styles) on the occasional weekend.
In college, I was the Cribbage champion for my dorm on one particular semester. In Colon, I played cards with students a couple times a week (I think) in my classroom during lunch until we were surprisingly forbidden to do so. I also learned and played the game of Spades (which feels like the opposite of Hearts) with my wife and a couple of my friends. I even managed to win a night of Texas Hold'em at another friend's house.
I've played a bit from time to time since then. Of my children, Katrina and Rowen had been the most interested in playing. However, despite the beautiful Cribbage board Rob gifted us one Christmas, I don't play nearly as much as I would like. I've had thoughts about starting a Euchre or Cribbage (or Hassenpfeffer, Spades, or Hearts) club at the school, but I always seem to be juggling a bit too much to start something else.
Still, just thinking about it is making my hands itchy to play again.
