While I was not certain about the outcome of the Rittenhouse trial, I was unsurprised by the jury's decision to acquit him. Our court system requires the jurors to follow the letter of the law, to remember that the burden of proof rests on the prosecution, and to only convict if there is no reasonable doubt about the crime. Wisconsin's laws on self defense allow for Rittenhouse to defend himself as he did. I did not watch the trial, but based on what I have read about it, I do not believe that the prosecution presented evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that Rittenhouse was not defending himself.
However, as a Pro-Life supporter, I cannot ethically or morally agree with any of Rittenhouse's actions that fateful night. More so, I am furious at those people who would treat him as some sort of hero. He is a poster-boy for bad decisions, poor parenting, and the dangers of guns in improperly trained hands.
While I agree with the verdict based on the law, I do not believe that this was a "victory." It certainly should not be celebrated.
