In today's first reading, God sends Ezekiel to the Israelites, calling them a "rebellious house." I found that an ironic reading for today, considering that we as a nation celebrate our rebellious nature today as a part of our Independence Day. Certainly, the reading was referring to rebellion against God, and we are celebrating our rebellion against our colonial monarch; still, I cannot help but note that our nation is one that frequently focuses on its rebellious upbringings.
For that matter, we celebrate rebellion in our society. There are many movies that idolize rebellious youth. There are often protests in rebellion against some aspect of our government with different political parties supporting different rebellious protests. People like to quote Jefferson's statement to Madison that "... a little rebellion now and then is a good thing … ." We even relish our little rebellions against bureaucracy or societal pressures.
Yes. I'd say that the United States is certainly a "rebellious house."
