God was not who anyone expected. He did not come in a way that met with people's preconceptions. The same is true today. My image of God, although comforting to me, is doubtless wrong. God's being is beyond my capacity to understand or imagine. He does not follow human laws or expectations, but rather is transcended to higher Truth--a Truth that came to the world not in grandeur and awe, but in humbleness and helplessness.
Those at the time who wanted a mighty warrior king to crush their enemies and remake the world to their benefit were bitterly disappointed. Jesus came to this world not to support the idea that "God helps those who help themselves," but that by helping others we become closer to God.
