As mentioned in our deacon's homily, all of today's readings, and even the psalm, deal with nature in comparison to the Word of God--which is also a reference to Jesus--or the Holy Spirit. Our relationship to nature was established at the time of human creation when we were told to be stewards of the world. Frequently, the Bible references the miraculous power within a single seed. In today's Gospel, Jesus referenced the need for care to be taken in the environment provided for seeds that fall. The same type of seed flourishes or fails depending on the ground where it falls.
Today's psalm talked about preparing the ground so that seeds can flourish. Certainly, it is our responsibility to take care of the Earth and to make certain that life within it continues to flourish. So too do we need to prepare our hearts and minds to accept the wisdom that is given to us. Hardened hearts have no chance for new revelations to take hold, let alone flourish. The thorns of preconceived notions and worldly considerations can choke out the hope and love that try to exist there.
God wants us to ready our hearts and minds to receive His message of compassion and Truth. Have we prepared a place for those seeds to grow? Are we opening our hearts, minds, and souls to Him?
