I wonder how often I hear the voice of God but do not recognize it. Similarly, I wonder how often I hear His words through the scripture and assume that they are meant for someone else. The implication in this Gospel is that God speaks directly to us, providing messages that we are meant to hear. However, we are often dismissive of His words to us, ignoring (deliberately or not) what He is asking of us. Sometimes we try to twist what we know He wants as a means to justify our own selfish desires.
Jesus acknowledged that what God asked of Him was difficult and troubling. Still, He understood that the path before Him, although tortuous, was the one that led to the greatest future. God's message for us is not always an easy one to hear, but it is the message that we need.
