While I am partially referring to Christmas, I mean it more--as was said in today's homily--that God is looking for us to receive Him now. Now, like a family member or a good friend, God is willing to visit us no matter the state of our "house." No matter how cluttered our thoughts, how dirty the corners of our minds, or how cobwebbed our souls, He is just happy that we have invited Him to visit.
However, like any guest, we can show Him deeper appreciation by preparing ourselves for His arrival. It would be nice for Him to find that we took the time to straighten up for His arrival. As with our friends, having the place cleaned up for them also helps us clean it up for ourselves. It gives us a reason to scrub and polish where we might not do so without the excuse.
Thus by preparing for the Lord's arrival, we are making ourselves better for ... ourselves. In truth, that's what He really wants for us anyway. That, and to spend some quality time with us.
