Avoiding spoilers, for those who do not know about this show, the concept is that a woman has died and woken up in "The Good Place"--a heaven-like realm. She knows that she does not belong there, but enlists the aid of another resident to help her blend in so she is not taken away to a place of eternal torment. From that starting point, we are taken on an amazing, twisting journey of comedy, philosophy, and ethics that brings up intricate questions about morality and existence.
Belly-laughs are plentiful, yet the compelling aspect for me was how much I loved the characters and wanted to discover what was going to happen to them as they struggled with issues of metaphysics--which is strangely more compelling than it sounds written in this sentence. Surprisingly, it manages to balance irreverence and reverence in a way that finds humor in everything while still encouraging universal respect. Best of all, it continually surprised me and defied my expectations.
I do not think that the show is for everyone, but it was certainly made for me.
