I think about these commands when deciding whether it is worth it to speak out (or comment on) those opinions that people give which seem to lead them away from Christ's teachings of love and forgiveness. Often, I say nothing as I know my response will be hostile (or perhaps just snarky) or because I just don't want to take the time. However, I feel that saying nothing sometimes leads people to believe that their actions or statements are condoned (especially if I've been tagged in the post).
I'm particularly bothered by the people who claim to be Christians, but who then post hate, fear, and selfishness. It is no wonder that so many people have turned away from Christianity if this is the way that people who claim to be Christians act. I think about Christ's warning concerning the false shepherds, and the many sheep that they lead astray.
The truth is that Christ's teachings would be considered socialist in today's society. He says to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and love the stranger. He speaks out against those who save up their fortunes more so than any other group of people in his teachings. Yet "christian" groups are doing the exact opposite: fighting against welfare, heathcare, racial equity, and a fairer distribution of resources. How do they not see that they have been led so far astray as to be almost directly opposed to the teachings of the one they profess to follow?
Let us follow Christ's lead in loving one another and seeking reconciliation with our neighbors, and thus Christ's teachings.
