Problem One: Student grades should provide both a motivation for student learning as well as an accurate means of demonstrating what students know; however, many students are not motivated by current grading systems, nor do these systems adequately represent students’ skills and abilities.
Problem Two: It is generally agreed that the ability to access and use technology is the key for many students’ future employment, yet many schools do not have the ability to provide adequate access to technology for such learning to take place.
Problem Three: Although knowing how to properly and appropriately use cell phones and other mobile devices is becoming an increasing part of modern life, many schools are not teaching students how to adeptly or appropriately use them.
One area that I am particularly interested in that all three of these problems relate to is the gamification of education. I would like to find a way to tap into the reward systems from video games as a means to better motivate and challenge students in their learning. Although I have made a few attempts at this in my own classroom, I'm still not entirely sure what this would even look like.
