In high school, I actually had the opportunity to be in a community theater production of the musical with a number of my friends and other students from our school filling in the the extras. I was one of the Keystone-ish Cops and had a blast. Again, I was in awe of the actor who played the Pirate King (one of the college students whose name I do not remember). He had one particular stunt where he jumped from the top of a tomb to the stage floor in swashbuckling knee high boots to point his sword at the Major General. One night, he landed wrong, slipped and fell hard on his backside. Without skipping a beat, he crossed his legs, pointed his sword, and delivered his line as though it was all intended (he did ask for ice later).
I wouldn't have many items on my "bucket list" if I was to have one, but playing the Pirate King would certainly be one of them. I might not be in the physical shape necessary to pull off some of the things that I have seen done in the role (especially the part about jumping off of a tomb), but I think my current age is more in line with the character in the story who has a 21 year old apprentice. I don't know if it would ever happen, but it is a favorite daydream of mine.
After all--"It is, it is a glorious thing ..."
