The First Sunday of Advent

As we prepare for Christmas, we are readying ourselves not for Jesus' birth (He's already done that), not for His Second Coming (that's still in the unknowable future), but for Jesus' arrival in our lives in the present. He is patiently waiting for us now, ready for us to open our hearts to Him and allow Him to pour in His love. This time is a reminder about the best parts of our humanity.

Our pastor reminded us today that the Nativity is a story of hospitality. While all of the inns were closed to the Holy Family, they were open to everyone: shepherds and magi, angels and animals. Where humanity so often closes itself off, Jesus opens the doors and invites everyone in.

It's so easy to become jaded with the materialism of this season. However, if we take the time to welcome our fellow human beings, and thus allow Jesus, into our lives as a part of these celebrations, we are getting closer to the truth behind the upcoming holidays. Jesus is ready for us. Are we ready for Him?

Barely Freezing

The temperature inched above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, changing the snow to rain and the roads to ice. Me? I prefer it to be 10 to 20 degrees colder. I prefer fluffy snow to shimmering ice.

Unfortunately, it looks like temperatures will be hovering around the freezing point for at least the next week. Normally, I would wear my snow sweaters as a way to show my support for snow. However, I only have the two, and they've already seen a great deal of use lately.

Hopefully, this current forecast will switch for the colder, the snow that we have will not be lost, and the rain will instead come down as more snow.

Christmas Lights

We brought the tree down from its non-holiday spot and started setting up lights today. At this point, we have the dining room, most of the kitchen, and the living room completed. All of them are on timers so that they should stay on until we go to bed and then come back on during the dark hours of the morning.

I was a bit smarter about how we used the ladder this year and thus was able to get the lights a bit more even on the tall windows that overlook our stairway. Thankfully, no one had to pull off the daredevil moves that Katrina used last year to get them up there. This is a good thing since no one here, not even Connor, likes being up on the ladder, let alone balanced on the edge of the windowsill (that still gives me shivers). All told, I feel that our lights are looking even better this year.

I love Christmas lights. They bring a wonderful cheerfulness to these darker days. Although the other Christmas decorations will come down soon after Epiphany, I like to keep the lights up until early March, when the sun starts to regain its prominence in the sky.

... It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas ...
