I am concerned when any political party looks to have control of both Houses of Congress as well as the Executive Branch of our government. I know that many people do not like the political bickering that goes on when the government is at odds with itself, but I prefer gridlock over sweeping legislation from the extreme end of a party platform. When neither party has full control, discussion and compromise become necessary.
I am particularly concerned by some of the actions that the Democratic Party might take should they gain both Houses and the Presidency. My largest issue would be the inevitable push for a pro-abortion policies. This is closely followed by my concerns about steps they would take against the Second Amendment as well as efforts to legalized (rather than decriminalize) drug use. I worry that those would be priorities rather than the more central issues such as education and healthcare. Again, without debate, laws can get railroaded through with little consideration for the full consequences.
Still, the election isn't over. President Trump's new campaign coordinator has already made significant gains by getting the President to move on three of his biggest mistakes in the recent months: shutting down the COVID briefings, siding against mask use, and pushing against mail-in voting. With the resumption of the briefings, his recent statements that people need to wear masks to get the virus under control, and his newly aggressive push to get people to send in for absentee ballots, he has already started to see gains in polls for taking positive action in this health crisis. This can not only help him directly in the election, but can help with those Republicans in embattled positions who have been in favor of a more proactive role from the government in this crisis.
