Once again, I find myself saying farewell to one of my heroes. More so than any other actor, Leonard Nimoy was the face of science fiction. When it comes to my earliest memories of television, I vividly remember seeing Nimoy's calm portrayal of Spock. For some reason, even though I have seen him age through his various appearances in recent years, I didn't think of him as ... well ... being mortal. Somehow I just expected to keep seeing him or at least hearing his voice no matter how many sequels or reboots Star Trek might go through. His appearance on other sci-fi shows always lent an extra gravitas to them. Even the movie 3 Men and a Baby seemed more ... real ... to me because I knew he directed it (I know he directed other movies, but this is the one [that isn't the amazing Star Trek 4] that I knew off the top of my head).
Nimoy's portrayal of Spock made being smart a good thing. He demonstrated how to calmly handle the most intense of situations, and even how to face death heroically. Those who haven't watched these performances are missing something great from their lives.
