On the way down, Janelle and I watched Ford V Ferrari, a movie that we both wanted to see yet had not yet purchased (I'm hoping to get it during some future Black Friday sale). It's a movie that I've been interested in seeing for a couple of years, but as I'm not a big car enthusiast, I wasn't sure if I would really like it. I need not have worried: it was an amazing film with fantastic acting and direction. In particular, Christian Bale really deserved an award for his role as Ken Miles, while James Mangold put another wonderful film credit to his resume (giving me some hope for Indiana Jones 5).
It was a little hard to watch the film as Janelle was using the sound from her phone while we were watching on my iPad. The frequent interruptions due to announcements over the intercom (which automatically paused the movie) required us to resync our timing several times. Still, it was a nice date-night sort of film considering that we were watching it on our anniversary.
On the way back, I watched Pulp Fiction on my own. Despite its standing in popular culture, I had never seen it before. After watching it, I'm still not sure what I saw, nor do I understand its massive popularity. It was, as advertised in its opening definition, "lurid subject matter." While I appreciated the character development and the creative narrative structure, I never do well with stories about terrible people. The only good person in the movie was the minor role of Fabienne (played by Maria de Medeiros), Butch's (Bruce Willis's character's) girlfriend. Certainly, there were plenty of elements of the movie which were "humorous" due to how shocking (and thus lurid) they were, but that was about it. I don't fault the actors as I was generally impressed by their performances, but I guess that I expected too much from a Tarantino film (as I have yet to see a movie of his that I have liked).
I'm glad I had the chance to watch both of these movies, even if my experiences with them were so wildly different.
