The homily focused on the idea that we often have to go against the crowd (as Noah did) to get God's work done. There are people in our society that look at us who go to church as foolish and uninformed, just as similar people no doubt looked at Noah while he built his ark. Our ark is the church and we gather in it even as common "wisdom" tells us that it's a waste of time (and sometimes even calls our religion an evil). Our flood is not of water, but of corruption and immorality, of people who claim that business comes before relationships, that their choice trumps the life of others.
The Gospel was short and to the point: Jesus went into the desert for 40 days, came back from the desert and proclaimed, "This is the time of fulfillment. The reign of God is at hand. Repent and follow the Word of God." It's been nearly two thousand years since He spoke this and some people are still expecting a different kind of reign. Jesus came to show us the true path to our eternal happiness, not to be a totalitarian dictator. The choice given to us since the time of Noah is still with us: to follow God or not. It seems like a simple matter, but it takes a lifetime of struggle.
