I wonder if this is what Jesus was trying to say in today's Gospel as well. He predicts that many terrible things will happen as the world comes to an end; however, instead of despairing, we are supposed realize that these events are harbingers of His coming--not death, but life eternal. I feel that this is true in any disaster; despite the destruction there are signs of joy and gladness as well. When one focuses only on the terrible (which is where our minds and hearts tend to go), one misses the moments of glory as well.
To me, Jesus's discussion about the end of the world is not so much about the end of the world as every minute of our lives. We need to look to hope in times of darkness. We need to find joy that counteracts the pain. There are signs of His love everywhere.
